Vitiligo is a skin disease that we know very little about and have no guaranteed cure for. Most treatments are experimental or intended to control and restrict the effects of the disease. Although narrowband UVB treatments are extremely promising and are the best treatment currently available to vitiligo patients, herbal treatments do offer some hope. Sadly the efficacy of these herbal remedies has been neglected and research conducted has been inadequate.
The concept behind the most successful conventional treatment (UVB treatment) is actually rooted in traditional herbal treatments that involve phototherapy. Psoralea corylifolia is an herb that is extremely useful because of its peculiar properties. It contains a naturally occurring compound called psoralen that can today also be produced in laboratories. In the past however, treatment with this herb was widely used against vitiligo as this compound facilitates and improves the reaction of the skin to sun exposure. This herb may be used as a topical application in its oil extract form or a powdered form can be used for ingestion.
The use of Picrorhiza in combination with certain conventional treatments and sun exposure has also been found to speed up recovery, as opposed to treatment with just sun exposure and medication. Similarly supplementation with a Ginkgo biloba extract has also been found to encourage repigmentation. Khella or Ammi visnaga is another herb, which could have a role to play in vitiligo treatment. An active constituent of this herb called ‘khellin’ works in a manner very similar to psoralen, demonstrating a stimulatory effect on re-pigmentation.

Vitiligo generally called white spots illness as well or Leucoderma, in which the skin loses its pigment due to the annihilation of melanocytes. Melanocytes are such pigment cells which found in the epidermis (the surface layer of the skin) and there are responsible for producing Melanin (a dark pigment that gives skin its color) and protects against ultraviolet radiation., The skin becomes pale when melanocytes stop producing melanin leaving areas of white patches this is called vitiligo.
To describe Vitiligo symptoms, the onset of the vitiligo symptoms is very visible in darker and wheatish skinned people as the contrast of white patches looks obvious against dark skin. The manifestation of flat areas of normal-feeling skin with complete pigment loss is sudden or gradual and appearance of vitiligo symptoms the lesions appear as flat areas with no pigment.
In common the affected areas are the face, elbows, knees, hands feet, and genitalia.
The initial vitiligo symptoms are easily observable with flat white spots or patches on your skin. Vitiligo symptoms usually starts the first white patch appears on the skin area remains exposed to the sun. Vitiligo symptoms do not cause physical discomfort to your skin, such as itching etc.
Vitiligo symptoms, vitiligo most commonly affects traumatic areas particularly on the face, upper chest, hands and groin. It may be widespread, affecting both sides of the body it may affect only one side of the body or it may affect only one localized area.
If the affected area contains hair, the hair may turn white then vitiligo symptoms sharply distinct white patches are seen rather obviously. Sometimes there may be seen by a circular white patch, resembling a halo.

Vitiligo a pigmentation problem in skin which is characterized by white spots on skin. These white spots may appear any place on skin but more probably these appear on open parts like face, neck, elbows, wrists, eyelids and foot, this shows that sun light or other environmental factors have some relation with this pigmentation disorder. The depigmentation in skin is not related to a specific region but is a universal skin condition and its victim is all nations across the globe. It affects all races and both gender equally.
Pigmentation
Pigmentation is a process in skin which responsible for skin color and protect skin from harmful effects of ultra violet radiation from sun. It is quality of melanin (pigmenting substance in skin) that it can absorb uv light and minimize its negative effects.
Pigmentation is an important characteristic of the skin. And due to anomaly in this process may leads to different skin disease or conditions. General terms used for the abnormalities in the pigmentation are termed as hyper-pigmentation and hypo-pigmentation or depigmentation.
Depigmentation
All the skin condition in which a deficiency of melanin take place came under the hood of depigmentation. Except albinism it is rare that all the body got depigmentation in skin but it affects some parts while other remain rich with pigment. White spots on skin are the sign of depigmentation on that skin’s part.
Vitiligo a common Depigmentation
Vitiligo is not an transmittable disease from one patient to other which occurs due to the germs attacks. And it not causes in weakness in body of patients. Most of the affected population with vitiligo are in good condition overall.
Vitiligo is a common skin condition and 50% of the patients get it before the age of 20 and 20% of those have a family background with same pathology.
I think some words about melanin and the term pigmentation is necessary while discussing about vitiligo.
Depigmentation and Melanin a Substance
Special skin cells Melanocytes produce a brownish substance called melanin, determination of skin color is a common characteristic of melanin. Problems in melanocytes like if these cells die or are altered then skin become white due to the lack of melanin.
On other hand excessive production of melanin in skin is also not better and causes some skin problems generally termed as hyper-pigmentation.
What are the causes of Depigmentaion
The real causes of vitiligo are not fully known to any one. However dermatologist presented some theories about it among them auto-immunity and inheritance are on the top.
Modern research has been rejected some older concepts like drinking milk after fish meal may cause vitiligo.
Auto-immunity:
1. certain nerve cells perform an abnormal functioning of produce a toxic substance, which damage melanocytes cells.
2. Due to some toxic products in skin Self destruction of the pigmentation producing cells to take place.
3. An alteration of the immune system that lead to the destruction of melanocytes.
Inheritance:
4. There would be a genetic defect that would make melanocytes were more likely to be destroyed. A study in this regards claims that gene named NLAP1 is responsible for vitiligo.

Pigmentation
Pigment mean is dot of color and here the pigmentation mean color of skin. People leaving at the equator have different color than the people leaving the region situated at the pole of earth .Because there are different levels of intensity of sunlight on different parts of the earth. Region where sunrays would be more intense there would be more production of melanin in the body and as quantity of melanin increases in the body it increase the darkening of skin..
There are many pigmentation disorder and most common among them Vitiligo.
Hyper-Pigmentation
Darkening of skin as compare to the surrounding area is termed as the hyper pigmentation. It is a two fold term. Two in the such a way
When in normal condition and for health skin when some dark patches appear it would be treated as a skin condition.
In vitiligo skin condition when white patches appear on the skin. Then treatment are applied to hyperpigmentation of the depigmented(vitiligo affected) are of skin.
Here hyper pigmentation is for treatment of skin condition.
Depigmentation
Loss or Lack of pigmentation in the skin is termed as depigmentation. Suppose when white patches of vitiligo skin condition appears on skin it is said patches of depigmentation. Beside vitiligo there are some other skin condition that also causes the depigmentation in skin like vitiligo.
Vitiligo
Vitiligo is pigmentation disorder causing depigmentation in skin by giving white patches on skin. No other skin condition for which people want pigmentation back than vitiligo. Also No other skin condition is as serious as this. Because real causes of vitiligo are not fully know and treatment of vitiligo normally take very long period and some time give not result.
Some other skin conditions which are also related to the depigmentation are as under:
White scars and hypopigmentation
Nevus depigmentosus
Pityriasis Alba
Idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis
